What We Do
Uniting people to build trust, give hope and serve those in need.
Helping the Homeless
Overnight Sleep System & Warming Center
Overnight Winter Sleep System
Brewster Cares serves as the last line of defense against homelessness in Putnam County during the coldest months of the year. From December through March, we provide safe overnight shelter, hot meals, showers, laundry access, and a welcoming, supportive environment for individuals without stable housing.
Our work extends beyond immediate needs. We partner with a range of local organizations and community resources to connect our guests with essential social services — including housing assistance, job support, mental health services, and more. Our goal is to help individuals take steps toward lasting stability and independence.
If you or someone you know needs shelter or assistance accessing services, please get in touch with Brewster Cares at 845-279-6146. We’re here to help — no one should face winter alone.
Daytime Warming Center
After launching our overnight shelter program, we recognized the need for a safe and warm daytime space for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Daytime Warming Center offers a welcoming environment where guests can warm up, rest, shower, do laundry, charge their phones, and use a computer to check email or access online resources. It also serves as a place to meet with case managers and take steps toward stability.
Guests play an active role in maintaining the space, helping to create a sense of shared community and dignity.
If you or someone you know needs a place during the day to charge a phone, use a computer, or meet with a case manager, please get in touch with Brewster Cares at 845-279-6146.
The Warming Center is open seven days a week from December through March, and on Tuesdays and Fridays during the rest of the year.

Supporting those in need
Supper Hugs
Through our Supper Hugs programs, we connect local restaurants with families in the community who need a meal. Whether a family is facing financial difficulties, an illness, a death in the family, or any other challenge, we want to ensure they know their community supports them. We have delivered 1,000 meals to families through this program so far.
If you know of a family that could use a meal, please get in touch with us at info@brewstercaresny.org

English as a Second Language
Adult ESL
Brewster Cares has proudly served over 600 adult ESL students in our community. Classes are free and open to all. We provide all necessary supplies — including notebooks, pens, and pencils — so there’s no cost to participate. Free babysitting is also available during class times to support families with children.
Class Schedule
In Brewster (St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish Center):
- Sundays: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Monday–Thursday: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- Thursdays (Morning Class): 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
